What should I know about storage and shelf life to keep the oil effective?

Peppermint essential oil's two key constituents — menthol and menthone — are volatile and oxidize when exposed to heat, light, and air. Oxidation diminishes the characteristic cooling sensation and fresh aroma, and can produce skin-sensitizing byproducts. To preserve quality, store the 10 ml bottle upright, cap firmly closed, in a cool, dark place such as a drawer or cabinet away from radiators, windows, and direct sunlight. An ideal temperature range is 15–20°C; avoid bathroom storage where humidity and temperature fluctuate.

The amber glass bottle provides some UV protection, but it is not a substitute for dark storage. After each use, wipe the dropper or orifice reducer clean with a lint-free cloth to prevent residue buildup that can let air in. With proper storage, the oil remains aromatically vibrant for about 12–18 months after opening. You'll notice fading when the sharp, minty top note dulls and a flat, slightly herbal or waxy undertone appears — that signals oxidation.

If the oil develops a noticeably different smell, becomes cloudy, or the dropper shows residue that won't wipe clean, it's best to replace it. Do not transfer to clear plastic containers; essential oils can degrade certain plastics and leach compounds. Keep out of reach of children and pets at all times.
