Herbal complexes with milk thistle, dandelion and bitter herbs are traditionally added to the diet during periods when meals become heavier or less varied: after holidays, during seasons with plenty of heavy food, with an irregular eating schedule, or when the menu contains few bitter and leafy vegetables.
This is a practically important question. Milk thistle (Silybum marianum) and dandelion (Taraxacum officinale) both belong to the daisy family (Asteraceae / Compositae) — the same family as chamomile, ragweed, chrysanthemum and echinacea. People with a documented allergy to any plant of this family are at increased risk of a cross-reaction.
