Magnesium chloride for cosmetic topical use (commonly referred to as "magnesium oil" despite being an aqueous solution, because of its characteristic oily-feeling on the skin) is a cosmetic preparation containing magnesium chloride hexahydrate (MgCl₂·6H₂O) — a naturally occurring mineral salt found in concentrated form in seawater and underground salt deposits (bischofite), obtained by evaporation of ancient seawater or from halite mining deposits. The preparation produces a characteristic mild warming sensation and improved local circulation sensation on the skin surface when applied and massaged in.
