The principle is straightforward. The inner wick is saturated with volatile compounds such as menthol, camphor, eucalyptus and similar essential oils. When you bring the inhaler close to a nostril and breathe in, the air carries these aromatic molecules into the nasal passages. Menthol activates the cold-sensitive TRPM8 receptors in the mucous membrane, which the brain reads as a "cooling" sensation and a feeling that breathing is freer.
