What cosmetic basma is

Cosmetic basma from Fitocosmetic is a fine powder of dried indigo leaves (Indigofera tinctoria), traditionally used in India and the Middle East as a plant-based hair colourant. In a 25 g pack it is a convenient single-use format for short or medium-length hair, or for a strand test before committing to a larger amount.

How it colours hair

Basma works by depositing natural blue-violet pigments onto the hair shaft. Used on its own it gives a cool, greenish tint, which is why it is almost always combined with henna (lawsonia). The ratio of the two powders determines the final shade:

• More henna — shifts the result toward chestnut and copper-brown;
• More basma — deepens the tone into dark brown and black.

Unlike synthetic dyes, plant pigments do not penetrate inside the hair to break its structure — they wrap around the cuticle, gradually building up colour with each application.

Besides pigment, indigo powder contains tannins and plant polysaccharides. On the scalp and hair these compounds have a mild astringent effect, which is why many people notice that strands feel denser and look glossier after the procedure. Basma is often chosen by those who want to step away from ammonia and peroxide colourants, cover the first grey hairs with a softer transition, or simply enjoy a botanical ritual at home.

How it is typically used

• mixed with henna in a chosen ratio and brewed with hot (not boiling) water to a thick paste;
• applied to clean, slightly damp hair and kept under a cap for 1–3 hours depending on the desired depth;
• rinsed out with water without shampoo; the final shade settles over 24–48 hours as the pigments oxidise.

Important notes

A small caution: basma should not be used alone on light or grey hair, as the result can turn unexpectedly bluish or greenish. Always do a strand test first, and avoid layering plant dyes over hair that has recently been treated with chemical colourants, perms or strong lighteners — the reaction between the two can be unpredictable. If skin irritation appears, discontinue use.
