Will the DEET in this lotion damage clothing, watch straps, or plastic gear?

This is a well-known property of DEET: it can act as a solvent on certain materials, including acetate frames (sunglasses), watch crystals and straps, synthetic fabrics (rayon, spandex, some nylon blends), painted or varnished surfaces, and some plastic buckles or gear housings.

To minimise risk, apply the lotion to skin and let it dry completely (a few minutes) before putting on clothing, backpacks, watches, or handling equipment. Avoid touching plastic or rubber surfaces with freshly lotioned hands. If you need to apply to ankles or wrists where gear sits, consider applying a thin layer and letting it absorb fully, or wear the gear first and apply around it.

Natural fibres (cotton, wool, linen) are generally unaffected. If accidental contact occurs on a sensitive surface, wipe it off promptly with a damp cloth. The lotion format is less prone to overspray drift than aerosols, which helps reduce accidental gear exposure — one reason some users prefer lotion for technical outdoor activities.
