Why does the pH 3.5 matter for intimate hygiene?

The vulvar skin and vaginal opening maintain an acidic pH largely due to lactobacilli producing lactic acid. This acidity inhibits the overgrowth of non-beneficial microbes and supports the skin’s barrier function. When a wash with a neutral or alkaline pH (typical of body soaps, which range from 7–10) is used regularly, it can temporarily raise the surface pH, weakening that natural defence and potentially leading to dryness, itch, or an imbalance in the local microbiome.

This gel is set at pH 3.5 to align with the area’s physiology. Lactic acid in the formula serves a dual role: it is a skin-relevant acid naturally present in the intimate zone, and it acts as a pH adjuster to keep the product stable at that low level. Using a pH-matched cleanser helps avoid the cycle of irritation → over-washing → further irritation that some people experience with standard body washes.

It’s worth noting that the vagina itself is self-cleansing; no product should be used internally. This gel is for the external vulvar area only. If you have recurrent discomfort, unusual discharge, or odour, a pH-balanced wash is not a substitute for medical evaluation.
