What is the difference between acetyl-L-carnitine and regular L-carnitine, and why would I choose this form?

Acetyl-L-carnitine is a derivative of L-carnitine where an acetyl group is attached to the molecule. This structural difference affects how it behaves in the body. Regular L-carnitine's primary, well-established role is transporting long-chain fatty acids into the mitochondria so they can be burned for energy — a process essential for muscle function during exercise. The acetyl form retains this transport function but the acetyl group also allows it to participate in other cellular processes, including the synthesis of acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter involved in focus, memory, and nerve signaling. This is why acetyl-L-carnitine is often discussed in the context of both physical training and periods of high mental demand, whereas plain L-carnitine is typically marketed almost exclusively for sports performance and fat metabolism. Neither form is a stimulant; they are nutrients that support the body's own energy-producing machinery. If your goal is strictly exercise-related fat transport, either form can work.
