What is chicory inulin and why is it included in this tea?

Chicory inulin is a naturally occurring fructan extracted from chicory root. It is a soluble dietary fibre that resists digestion in the stomach and small intestine, arriving largely intact in the large intestine. There, it serves as a fermentable substrate for beneficial bacteria such as bifidobacteria and lactobacilli — this is what "prebiotic" means. In this blend, inulin contributes a subtle body and a very mild, neutral sweetness without adding sugar or calories. It does not thicken the tea noticeably at the serving amount used. Regular consumption of prebiotic fibres, as part of a varied diet with adequate fluid intake, is associated with normal digestive function. The inulin here complements the chaga, which also contains polysaccharides, giving the beverage a fibre-containing profile unusual for a flavoured tea. If you are not used to inulin, start with one cup a day and observe how your digestion responds; some people experience temporary bloating when increasing prebiotic intake quickly.
