Can I take this tincture if I am already taking sedative medicines?

Valerian is a herbal food supplement with sedative potential. If you are already taking medicines with a calming, sleep-inducing or anxiolytic action (including prescription ones), taking valerian tincture at the same time may increase their effect, and not always predictably.

This does not mean it is automatically ruled out, but it does mean that you should not start such a combination on your own without discussing it with a doctor or pharmacist. A specialist will be able to assess the specific medicines you take and give a well-founded recommendation.

The same applies if you take any other medicines on a regular basis: even if they are not sedatives, the interaction of plant extracts with medicines is a subject best checked with a specialist rather than decided on the basis of general advice.

Valerian tincture is a food supplement, not a medicine, and that is precisely why it does not undergo the same clinical testing for drug interactions as medicines do. This is an additional argument in favour of a consultation if you take anything on a regular basis.
