Burdock root infusion is a single-ingredient herbal product without additives, and in general it fits well into the normal diet of a healthy adult. Nevertheless, there are situations in which caution is advisable.
Allergy to plants of the Asteraceae (Compositae) family. Burdock belongs to this family, as do chamomile, wormwood and ragweed. If you have a confirmed allergy to these plants or hay fever associated with them, it is best to consult an allergist before drinking it.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding. There is insufficient data on the safety of drinking burdock root infusion regularly during these periods, so it is best to avoid it or discuss the matter with a doctor.
Chronic conditions and medication. If you take medicines on a regular basis or have kidney, liver or gastrointestinal conditions, consult a specialist before regularly adding any herbal infusions to your diet.
Increased digestive sensitivity. The inulin in burdock root is a plant fibre that in some people can cause bloating when consumed in unaccustomed large amounts. Start with a small amount of the infusion and watch how your body reacts.
Burdock root infusion is only given to children after consulting a paediatrician.
