Vitamin A accumulates in the liver and adipose tissue, so uncontrolled long-term intake is undesirable for everyone — but there are groups who should be especially careful.
- Pregnant women and those planning a pregnancy. Excessive retinol intake in the first trimester is associated with risks to the foetus. A specialist should be consulted before taking any vitamin A supplements during this period.
- Breastfeeding women. Vitamin A requirements change during lactation; it is best to discuss the optimal amount with a doctor.
- People with liver disease. Since vitamin A is metabolised and stored in the liver, taking supplements when you have a liver disease requires medical supervision.
- Those taking several supplements at the same time. If your diet already includes multivitamins, complexes for eyesight or fish oil, your total retinol intake may be higher than it seems.
If you take any medicines or have a chronic condition, consult a specialist before you start taking it.
