Zinc is one of the essential minerals: the body does not synthesise it on its own and gets it only from food or supplements. The main dietary sources are red meat, seafood (especially oysters), legumes, nuts and pumpkin seeds. With a varied diet containing enough of these foods, additional intake is usually not needed.
Situations in which people more often turn to a single-ingredient zinc supplement:
A monotonous or restricted diet – vegetarian or vegan diets, or diets that exclude whole groups of foods.
Periods of stress and a heavy workload – when the quality of nutrition temporarily declines.
Attention to skin, hair and nails – zinc takes part in protein synthesis and affects the condition of these tissues.
Recovery after physical exertion – the mineral is involved in the processes of cell renewal.
A wish to take a single-ingredient supplement with a clear, minimal composition instead of a multi-component complex.
If you already take multivitamins or another mineral complex, check their composition first: duplicating zinc from several sources is undesirable. Pregnant and breastfeeding women and people with chronic conditions should consult a specialist before starting.
