How do I prepare a decoction of elecampane roots correctly?

LEKRASET Aedvaagijuured are chopped elecampane roots and rhizomes, not a tea in bags. Dense plant material does not release its constituents when simply steeped in boiling water: a proper decoction requires a water bath.

Method according to the label: pour 1 glass (200 ml) of hot boiled water over 1 tablespoon of the dried chopped roots, heat in a water bath for 30 minutes, cool, strain and top up the decoction with boiled water to 200 ml. Drink the decoction warm, 1/2 glass 2–3 times a day, 1 hour before meals.

The finished decoction has a characteristic astringent, slightly bitter taste with a pronounced herbal aroma — this is normal for elecampane. Even if the taste seems too intense, do not change the proportions or the preparation time given on the label: it is the long heating that allows the inulin, essential oils and mucilage to pass into the water.

The label does not state how long the finished decoction keeps; like any herbal drink without preservatives, it quickly loses its freshness, so keep it in the fridge and make a fresh batch often.
