For dry and brittle hair, castor oil can be used as a pre-wash treatment. Apply a small amount to the lengths or ends, spread it with your fingers or a wide-toothed comb and leave it on for a while, then wash your hair thoroughly with shampoo. If your hair is fine or quickly loses volume, start with the ends only: this makes it easier to judge whether this texture suits you.
The oil is applied to the scalp very sparingly, along partings, and then gently spread with the fingertips without vigorous rubbing. According to the product description, the oil supports the natural strength and shine of hair and softens and moisturises the skin, which is why it is also used for scalp care. However, it is not intended to address medical scalp problems, so if you have persistent itching, marked flaking or irritation, it is best to see a specialist.
Because of its thickness, the oil may not wash out the first time. A practical approach is to apply shampoo to slightly damp hair first, lather it well at the roots and along the lengths, then rinse and repeat if necessary. There is no point in applying a lot of oil "just in case": an excess does not enhance the care but makes the hair heavy and can leave a greasy feeling after washing.
