Ground ginger and fresh ginger are related, but they are not identical in taste or texture. TRS Ground Ginger is made from dried ginger root and finely milled, which gives it a smooth powder form and a deeper, warmer flavour profile than fresh ginger. It adds warmth, brightness and a lightly peppery note without adding moisture or fibrous pieces.
Fresh ginger is often used when a recipe needs a juicy, freshly grated character or visible ginger texture. Ground ginger is better when you want even distribution through a mixture, such as cake batter, biscuit dough, marinades, spice blends, soups or sauces. It is also easier to keep on hand because it does not need peeling or grating before use.
When substituting, avoid assuming that the flavour will match exactly. Ground ginger can taste more concentrated in some dishes, especially in hot drinks and baking, so begin with less than you think you need and increase gradually. If a recipe depends on the fresh, zesty bite of grated ginger, the powder can still add ginger warmth, but the final result will be slightly different.
