How strong is the bitter taste, and can I adjust it?

The flavor of an infusion made from dried chicory root is distinctly bitter and earthy. This bitterness comes from the plant's natural bitter substances, which are part of its traditional appeal for digestive support. It is milder than very strong bitter herbs but more pronounced than a typical herbal fruit tea.

You have full control over the final taste of your drink:

  • Amount: Start with a smaller quantity (e.g., one teaspoon per cup) and increase to find your preferred intensity.
  • Steeping Time: A shorter steep (3-4 minutes) yields a lighter, less bitter infusion. Leaving it to steep longer (8-10 minutes or more) extracts more of the bitter compounds and results in a stronger, more robust flavor.
  • Water Temperature: Using boiling water will extract the compounds more fully and quickly. For a slightly milder brew, you can use water just off the boil.
  • Combining: The earthy bitterness of chicory root pairs well with other herbs. You can blend it with a small amount of licorice root for natural sweetness, fennel or anise for a digestive spice note, or roasted dandelion root for a more complex coffee-alternative profile.

Experiment to find the balance that suits your palate. The used root pieces can typically be steeped a second time for a much lighter cup.
