Because the pigments are direct dyes without peroxide, they sit on the cuticle and rinse away incrementally. Most people notice the cool tone holding well for 4–6 washes, then gradually warming up again over the next few. The included UV filter helps slow sun-induced fading, but prolonged UV exposure (beach, outdoor sports) will still break down the pigment faster.
Habits that strip the tone quicker: washing daily, using hot water, clarifying or deep-cleansing shampoos, swimming in chlorinated or salt water, and heat styling without protection. To extend the result, wash with lukewarm water, use a sulphate-free shampoo on non-toning days, and apply a leave-in conditioner with UV protection before sun exposure. A quick re-application of the toning shampoo once a week is usually enough to keep brassiness at bay.
If you need to remove the tone entirely — for example, before a salon colour appointment — a clarifying shampoo used 2–3 times over a few days will lift most of the deposited pigment.
