Porosity matters most: Highly porous hair (often from bleaching or chemical services) grabs pigment quickly but also releases it faster. Low-porosity hair may take the colour less intensely at first but can hold it longer.
Washing habits: Frequent shampooing, hot water, and clarifying or sulphate-heavy shampoos accelerate fading. Cool water and colour-protecting shampoos extend the life of the tone.
Heat styling: Regular blow-drying, straightening, or curling at high temperatures opens the cuticle and speeds pigment loss. Using a heat protectant helps.
Product buildup: Heavy oils, silicones, or styling residues can create a barrier that makes the initial deposit patchy and the fade uneven.
On a typical pre-lightened base with moderate washing (2–3 times per week) and gentle care, the vivid tone often stays noticeable for 6–12 washes before shifting to a softer pastel. Refreshing with a colour-depositing conditioner or a diluted re-application can maintain the shade between full treatments.
