How important is the allergy test, and what am I actually testing for?

The allergy test (patch test) is a mandatory safety step because permanent hair dyes contain ingredients, such as paraphenylenediamine (PPD) or similar chemical compounds, that are known sensitizers. A small but significant number of people can develop a severe allergic reaction upon exposure, even if they've used hair color before without issue. Reactions typically manifest as contact dermatitis—intense itching, redness, swelling, blistering, or rash on the skin—and in rare cases can lead to more serious systemic responses.

Performing the test 48 hours before each use, as instructions typically recommend, allows time for a delayed reaction to appear. It is especially important if you have a history of skin sensitivities, eczema, or allergies to other products. This test is not a guarantee against future reactions, but it is the best way to screen for a potentially dangerous sensitivity before applying the product to your entire scalp.
