How does a sulphate-free shampoo clean differently, and will it actually remove buildup?

Sulphate-free shampoos use milder surfactants that lift dirt, sebum, and light product residue without aggressively dissolving the scalp's natural protective lipids. This means you get clean hair without that tight, "squeaky" feeling that often signals over-cleansing. For daily washing, after the gym, or during heating season when the scalp is already prone to dryness, this gentler approach helps maintain comfort.

If you use heavy silicones, waxes, or water-resistant styling products, a single wash may not remove everything. In that case, a second lather or an occasional clarifying wash (once every 1–2 weeks) keeps buildup in check without making the sulphate-free formula your daily driver. The shampoo still foams and spreads well; the difference is in how the hair feels after rinsing — more supple, less stripped.

Tip: massage the scalp for 30–60 seconds before rinsing. Mechanical action does a lot of the cleaning work regardless of surfactant strength.
