Start by washing your hair with a gentle shampoo and towel-drying until damp but not dripping wet. This removes product buildup that could interfere with colour development while allowing the cream to spread more easily. Section your hair into 3-4 parts depending on thickness, securing each with clips to ensure thorough coverage.
Using gloves (the cream can stain fingers), apply a small amount from roots to ends, working through each section methodically. The cream format spreads more evenly than powder henna, but taking time to distribute it uniformly prevents patchy colour. Once applied, comb through gently with a wide-tooth comb to eliminate streaks and ensure every strand is coated.
Leave the cream on for 30-60 minutes at room temperature. Unlike some chemical dyes, there is no heat requirement, and longer processing does not necessarily mean deeper colour — henna-based products develop to their intended shade within this timeframe. If your hair is very thick or coarse, you may need the full 60 minutes for even uptake.
Rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water until the water runs clear, then follow with a gentle conditioner if desired. Avoid hot water which can cause the colour to oxidize and shift. Allow hair to air dry and examine the result in natural light — the Bitter Chocolate shade should appear as a deeper brown with subtle warmth rather than flat ash tones.
Wait at least 48 hours before shampooing again to let the colour fully settle and oxidize to its true tone. During this period, avoid swimming in chlorinated water or using harsh clarifying shampoos which can strip the colour before it has properly bonded to the hair shaft.
