How do I apply it without staining my skin, towels, or bathroom surfaces?

Direct dyes in this shampoo are water-soluble until they dry on the hair shaft, so they will stain porous surfaces — skin, cotton towels, bath mats, grout, and clothing — on contact. Before starting, put on the gloves provided (or nitrile gloves) and drape an old dark towel over your shoulders. Apply the product to thoroughly wet hair, massaging it in evenly from roots to ends as you would a regular shampoo. Leave it on for the time indicated on the packaging (typically 3–10 minutes depending on desired intensity), then rinse with lukewarm water until the runoff is completely clear. Any splashes on skin should be wiped off immediately with a damp cloth; dried stains on skin fade in a day or two with normal washing. Launder stained textiles separately in cold water before the pigment sets. Clean bathroom surfaces promptly with a non-abrasive cleaner. Avoid contact with eyes; if it happens, rinse thoroughly with water.
