Menthol and warming ingredients create a contrasting effect that many people describe as ‘cool at first, then warm’. This is no accident: menthol activates the cold receptors in the skin, so a light freshness is felt in the first few seconds after application. Then the warming substances boost local blood circulation and the area starts to feel noticeably warmer, while the menthol makes this warmth more contrasting and noticeable.
The intensity of the sensations depends on several factors:
- Amount of balm. A small amount gives a gentle effect; if you apply more and rub it in vigorously, the warmth will be more pronounced.
- Area of application. The skin on the neck or the inside of the knee is thinner and more sensitive than on the back or shoulders, so the sensations there may be more intense.
- Individual sensitivity. People with sensitive skin should start with a minimal amount and not cover the area with thick fabric straight after application, as this increases the warming.
The bisabolol in the formula acts as a softening component: it makes the formula gentler on the skin, reducing the risk of irritation from the active warming substances. This is particularly important with regular use.
