Oily sea fish such as mackerel, sardines and salmon remains the main dietary source of EPA and DHA. When fish is regularly part of the diet (2-3 servings a week), a healthy person's need for a supplement is usually covered by food. Fish oil capsules such as OstroVit Omega 3 are relevant when this condition is not met: with an irregular diet, a dislike of fish or fish rarely appearing on the table.
The fundamental difference lies in form and predictability. The amount of EPA and DHA in fish varies depending on the species, the way it is cooked and its origin. A capsule gives a fixed amount of fatty acids in one dose, which makes it easier to control the composition of the diet. At the same time, a capsule does not completely replace fish as a food: fish contains protein, B vitamins, iodine and other nutrients that the supplement does not.
A slight fishy smell of the capsules is a normal property of products with a high fish oil content, not a sign of low quality. If the smell bothers you after taking them, the capsules can be taken during a meal, which reduces its intensity.
The supplement is not a replacement for a varied diet. If you take anticoagulants, are pregnant or are breastfeeding, consult a doctor before you start taking it.
