The main difference lies in texture and how the product behaves on the skin. Gels usually have a light, watery base: they absorb quickly, feel cooling and leave almost no trace. A balm is richer: it spreads more slowly, stays on the surface of the skin longer and also softens it — this is especially noticeable on dry or rough areas such as knees, elbows or heels.
The balm form is convenient when you need targeted application with the option of rubbing it in unhurriedly: the product does not run or smear onto neighbouring areas, which matters when self-massaging a particular joint or muscle. A gel is more often chosen when you want to apply the product quickly to a large area or need a pronounced cooling effect.
If the skin in the area of application tends to be dry, or you want to combine skin care with a relaxing routine, the balm is preferable. If speed of application and a light texture are your priority, a gel may be more practical. Both formats are cosmetic products and do not replace medical care when symptoms are pronounced or long-lasting.
