Can the DEET in this lotion damage plastics, synthetic fabrics, or coated surfaces?

DEET is a known solvent for several materials. It can soften, cloud, or permanently damage acetate frames (eyeglasses, sunglasses), watch crystals, plastic lens coatings, synthetic fabrics like rayon, spandex, or acetate blends, rubberized grips, leather, painted or varnished surfaces, and some coated outdoor gear (tent fabrics, backpack straps, waterproof membranes). Citriodiol® does not have this effect, but the DEET 15% in this formula does.

Practical precautions: apply the lotion and let it absorb fully before putting on glasses, watches, or jewelry. Avoid touching treated skin to plastic surfaces (phone screens, camera bodies, GPS units) until dry. If you treat cuffs or collars, test an inside seam first. Wash hands after application before handling sensitive equipment. If accidental contact occurs, wipe the item clean promptly with a damp cloth.

The lotion base absorbs cleanly and leaves no sticky residue, which reduces transfer risk once dry, but the chemical interaction potential remains while the product is wet. For high-value gear, consider applying repellent to skin only and relying on permethrin-treated clothing (separate product) for fabric-level protection.
