You can use shea butter on the face as an occlusive finishing layer, especially if your skin is dry. It forms a soft protective film on the surface that slows water loss, so it works well when applied over a light moisturiser or on damp skin. However, it is not a light facial oil, and some people find thick layers too heavy.
If your skin tends to become congested or break out easily, start with about half a pea-sized amount and massage it in until no visible film remains. You can also apply it only to the driest parts of the face, such as the cheeks, and leave the T-zone without it. A patch test on the jawline for a day or two is a sensible way to see how your skin reacts.
Do not apply it around the eyes, as the product is for external use only. If you notice any tightness, redness, itching, or sensitivity, stop using it. Shea butter is not designed to treat acne or other skin conditions; it is a skin-care product used for dryness and comfort. Individual tolerance varies, so the right amount depends on your skin type.
