Shea butter is a rich plant fat that works by creating a semi-occlusive film on the skin surface. This film slows down transepidermal water loss, which accelerates in low-humidity environments such as heated indoor spaces or freezing outdoor air. Unlike petroleum-based occlusives, shea butter absorbs with a drier finish, so hands don't feel greasy or slippery after application — useful if you handle paper, tools, or a keyboard shortly after.
The formula is designed to address the nail plate and cuticle area, which often receive less attention than the back of the hand. Emollients in the shea butter base penetrate the thin skin at the proximal nail fold and the hyponychium, reducing the rough, lifted edges that catch on fabric and lead to hangnails.
Parabens are preservatives that some prefer to avoid due to potential skin sensitisation, especially on already compromised barrier skin. Synthetic dyes serve no functional purpose in a hand cream and can trigger contact reactions in fragrance-sensitive individuals. Mineral oils and petroleum jelly are highly effective occlusives, but they create a heavy, sometimes tacky film that many find unpleasant during daytime activities; they can also interfere with the skin's natural lipid production if used exclusively long-term.
