Inositol in general is a carbohydrate-like polyol (a hexahydroxycyclohexane) classified as a vitamin-like substance, sometimes referred to in older literature as vitamin B8, though the body synthesises approximately three-quarters of its inositol requirement independently. D-chiro-inositol (DCI) is the form that participates specifically in insulin signal transduction pathways as a component of inositolphosphoglycan (IPG) second messenger systems, and it is found in particularly high concentrations in tissues with high metabolic activity. D-chiro-inositol is found naturally in buckwheat, legumes, locust bean, carob and other plant sources.
