Why does an iron supplement contain folic acid and vitamin B12?

Iron, folic acid and vitamin B12 are included in one formula because all three are involved in haematopoiesis — the formation of red blood cells.

Iron is needed for the synthesis of haemoglobin — the protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen to the tissues. However, iron does not work in isolation: for normal cell division and the maturation of red blood cells, the body also needs folic acid and vitamin B12. A deficiency of these can disrupt this process regardless of whether the body has enough iron.

This is why this combination is often found in formulas chosen during periods of increased need: with an unbalanced diet, intensive exertion or a feeling of chronic fatigue. Taking all three ingredients together is easier than keeping track of each one separately.

It is important to understand that the supplement complements the diet but does not replace a balanced diet and is not a treatment. If you suspect a deficiency of any of these substances, it makes sense to have blood tests first and consult a specialist — this will help you choose a suitable dosage and avoid excessive intake. Do not exceed the recommended daily dose; the supplement is not recommended for children under 3 years of age; if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, consult a doctor; and keep the vials out of the reach of children.
