Why should this oil not be heated, and how should I actually use it in cooking?

Hemp seed oil is a delicate, unrefined plant oil. The product notes explain that it is best used unheated or added to food at the end, because high temperatures can damage fragile unsaturated fats and also mute its flavour. That means it is not suitable for frying, roasting, or high-heat sautéing.

It works well in all of these no-heat situations:

  • Salad dressings: whisk it with lemon juice, vinegar, mustard, or fresh herbs.
  • Dips: stir it into hummus, bean spreads, or yogurt-based dips after they are prepared.
  • Smoothies: blend a small spoonful into a fruit or green smoothie for a different fat source.
  • Finishing dishes: drizzle it over cooked vegetables, soups, porridge, grain bowls, or pasta just before serving.

The flavor is mildly nutty and earthy, so it is often best to start with a small amount and adjust. You can also use it in place of olive or sunflower oil in recipes that do not require heating, such as pesto, marinades, or mayonnaise-style sauces. If you want some warm-food application, add it only after the food has left the stove or oven.
