AHA acids, such as glycolic, lactic, citric, malic and tartaric acids, work by loosening the bonds between dead skin cells. This process exposes fresher, newer skin cells that are more vulnerable to UV damage. In addition, the acid itself can make the skin more reactive to sunlight for a period after use. That is why the product notes recommend using daytime SPF after you use the mask.
You should apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30 the day after using the mask, and ideally every day as part of your routine. The increased sun sensitivity can last for several days, so it is not just the first day. If you are going to be outdoors, reapply sunscreen every two hours, and consider wearing a hat or seeking shade. This is especially important if you use the mask regularly, because repeated exfoliation without sun protection can lead to pigmentation and premature aging.
If you are using the mask in the evening, you can still apply sunscreen the next morning. If you use it in the morning, apply sunscreen immediately after rinsing and before going outside. Do not skip sunscreen even if you are indoors, because UV rays can pass through windows. This precaution is a standard recommendation for any AHA product, not just this one.
