Ichthammol is a sulfonated shale-oil derivative, and its distinct tar-like aroma and deep colour are normal — they indicate the active ingredient is present at the stated 10% concentration. The vaseline base does not mask these properties; instead it helps the ointment adhere to skin, which also means it transfers easily onto anything it touches. To minimise staining, apply only to the intended spot, let it absorb for a few minutes, then cover with a non-stick gauze pad or a breathable plaster. Wear older clothing or place a towel over bedding at night. If staining occurs, pre-treat the fabric with a degreasing dish soap or a stain remover for oily marks before washing at the highest temperature the garment allows. The smell lingers on skin until the ointment is fully removed; warm water and soap usually clear it.
