Why does it contain petrolatum and what does it do?

Petrolatum (often listed as petroleum jelly) serves as the balm's base. Its primary role is texture and delivery: it creates a semi-solid, compact consistency that makes the product easy to scoop a small amount and carry without spillage. More importantly, it acts as an occlusive agent, forming a protective layer on the skin that slows down the evaporation of the volatile active oils like camphor, menthol, eucalyptus, and clove. This helps "hold" those aromatic components on the applied area longer, allowing more time for them to be massaged in and produce their characteristic warming-cooling sensation. Consequently, this texture makes a small amount go a long way, contributing to the balm's practical, lasting effect. If you have known sensitivities to petrolatum-based products, it's wise to perform a patch test on a small area of skin first.
