Dogs lick their paws, especially when something new is on them. LOODU Käpasalv is not intended to be eaten. The formula contains propolis extract, beeswax, and tea tree oil, and any of these can be a source of individual sensitivity. The product guidance is simply to be cautious if your pet tends to lick freshly applied balm or has very reactive skin.
You can reduce licking before it starts. Apply a thin layer — a thick coating is more likely to feel noticeable and invite licking, and it does not improve the effect. Massage the balm into the pads so no sticky pools remain. Then give your dog something absorbing to do for a few minutes: a short walk on a clean surface, a slow sniffing session, or a food puzzle. By the time the balm settles into a light layer, the dog usually loses interest.
If your dog licks the paws right after application, do not panic. A small amount of balm being swallowed as part of normal grooming is not the same as eating the product from the tube. But if you see repeated licking, wipe the paws with a soft cloth to remove the excess and apply a noticeably thinner layer next time. Also check that the balm is not getting trapped between the paw pads or around the nails, where it is harder to absorb.
Watch for signs that your dog is bothered beyond the licking — for example, redness, scratching, or rubbing the paws on the floor. In that case, stop using the balm and clean the paws, then contact your veterinarian to decide whether further measures are needed. Keep the tube out of your dog's reach, because the balm is a cosmetic product, not a treat.
