Sulphate-free indicates the cleansing agents are not the harsher sulphate surfactants found in many traditional shampoos; the wash therefore tends to feel milder and less stripping. This matters for oily scalps because very strong cleansing can leave the skin temporarily dry, which may prompt a rebound increase in sebum production. A milder base helps the hair feel light rather than rough after washing.
