What does "silicone-free" mean in practice for my hair?

Many conventional shampoos and conditioners deposit silicones (ingredients like dimethicone) that coat each strand. That coating gives instant slip and shine but can accumulate, making hair feel heavy, look flat at the roots, and resist moisture from masks or leave-in treatments. This shampoo skips silicones entirely. In practice, the first few washes may feel different — less "slippery" — because you're feeling your actual hair texture, not a film. Over time, hair tends to feel lighter, hold volume better at the crown, and absorb conditioners or oils more effectively. It also means you can refresh with dry shampoo or water-only rinses between washes without fighting a silicone barrier. If you've used silicone-heavy products for years, allow 2–3 weeks for the old coating to wash out fully before judging the result.
