What do olive oil and vitamin E actually do in this formula?

Olive oil is rich in oleic acid and other fatty acids that integrate into the stratum corneum — the outermost layer of skin — where they help reconstruct the lipid matrix that holds skin cells together. A stronger lipid matrix means less transepidermal water loss, so the skin stays hydrated longer and feels less rough or tight. The oil also leaves a light, non-occlusive film that gives immediate smoothness without a heavy greasy residue. Vitamin E (tocopherol) is a fat-soluble antioxidant. In a cream, it serves two roles: it protects the product's own oils from oxidation, extending shelf life, and once on the skin it helps neutralise free radicals generated by UV exposure, pollution, and temperature swings. This does not replace sunscreen, but it adds a secondary defence layer for daily environmental stress. Together, the two ingredients address both the structural (lipid replenishment) and protective (antioxidant) sides of dry-skin care.
