Magnesium is involved in the transmission of nerve impulses, in muscle contraction and relaxation, and in the processes that produce energy from food. This means that the body uses more of it precisely when it is working harder than usual.
Extra magnesium is most often considered in the following situations:
Regular training and physical activity — during intense exercise magnesium is lost in sweat, and the daily requirement increases.
High mental workload — a demanding work schedule, deadlines, prolonged concentration.
Chronic lack of sleep and insufficient recovery — magnesium is involved in processes linked to relaxation of the nervous system.
Stressful periods — stress speeds up the excretion of magnesium from the body, creating an additional deficit.
That said, the supplement does not replace a wholesome diet: nuts, seeds, legumes, wholegrain foods and dark green vegetables contain sufficient amounts of magnesium. Tablets are convenient as an addition to the diet during periods of increased strain or when your diet is temporarily unbalanced.
