In which situations does it make sense to add calcium to your diet, and who is it particularly relevant for?

Calcium enters the body primarily through food: dairy products, hard cheeses, sesame seeds, almonds, leafy greens and fortified plant-based drinks are all sources of it. If your diet is varied and includes enough of these foods, your need for a supplement may be low.

Calcium supplements are more often considered in the following situations:

  • the diet is monotonous or contains few dairy products and other calcium-rich foods;
  • a vegan or strict vegetarian diet is followed without fortified foods;
  • increased physical exertion, which raises the body's use of minerals;
  • age-related changes, when the absorption of calcium from food may decrease.

Calcium plays a part in the functioning of bone tissue, teeth, muscles and the nervous system, which is why it is often added to the diet during periods when you want to pay more attention to your mineral balance.

It is important to remember that the supplement does not replace a complete diet and is not intended to treat or prevent any disease. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, take medication or are planning a long course, it is worth consulting a doctor before you start.
