Field horsetail has a characteristic grassy flavour with a slight astringency that not everyone enjoys on its own. Fortunately, it can be combined successfully with other herbs. According to the manufacturer's description, horsetail can be used in herbal blends; mixing it with mild aromatic plants makes the infusion better balanced in flavour. In practice, mint (which adds freshness), lemon balm (lemony notes), chamomile (softness and sweetness), wild thyme (a light spiciness) and lime blossom (a honeyed shade) all work well. Berry-bush leaves — raspberry, currant and strawberry — also work well. For a brighter flavour you can add a few dried rosehips or lingonberries, as well as orange or lemon zest. Set the proportions to your own taste: start with equal parts of horsetail and your chosen addition, then adjust. If you want horsetail to stay the main ingredient, use twice as much of it as of the additional herb. Blending not only improves the flavour but also makes herbal drinks more varied to drink, especially if you drink the infusion regularly. Experiment, combine different herbs — and each time you will get a new, unique drink. If you have a chronic condition, are pregnant or take medicines, be sure to consult a doctor before introducing new blends.
