Why are the tablets chewable: does it matter, or is it just marketing?

Most vitamin D supplements come as capsules or oil drops. Chewable tablets are a less common but entirely reasonable format. Their main practical advantage is that the tablet does not need to be washed down with water: it can be chewed or dissolved in the mouth during a meal, at home, on the road or at work.

This is especially relevant for people who find it hard to swallow capsules (for example, with a strong gag reflex), and for those who want to fit the supplement into their usual routine without extra conditions. The chewable form also removes the need to keep a glass of water at hand, which makes it easier to stay regular.

As for absorption, vitamin D3 is fat-soluble, so it is traditionally recommended to take it with food that contains fats; this is true for any form, including chewable tablets. Taking it on an empty stomach or with a completely fat-free meal may reduce the efficiency of absorption.

So the chewable form is above all a matter of convenience and regularity, not a fundamental difference in the composition or action of the nutrient. Please note that the tablets contain glucose and the sweetener sorbitol: excessive consumption of sorbitol may have a laxative effect.
