Why is sea buckthorn oil such a bright colour, and will it stain skin or clothes? — Sea Buckthorn Oil 100 ml - Biolit

The bright orange colour of sea buckthorn oil is not a dye or an impurity but a direct result of its high carotenoid content. It is carotenoids that give sea buckthorn its characteristic colour, and they are the main active component for which the product is chosen.

On the skin: when applied locally, the oil can temporarily tint the skin yellowish, especially if a large amount is applied. This goes away after washing. That is why it is recommended for local use rather than for applying to large areas of the body like an ordinary lotion.

On clothing and bed linen: carotenoids are fat-soluble pigments, and sea buckthorn oil stains are much harder to wash out than those from light-coloured oils. If you apply the oil at night, it is best to use old bedding or wait until the oil has absorbed before going to bed. On light-coloured clothing, marks may remain for a long time.

When taken internally, the colour of the oil has no effect on its taste or safety — it is simply a visual feature of the product. The oil is best stored in a dark place away from direct sunlight so that the carotenoids do not break down faster than usual.
