Why is CoQ10 made in oil-based capsules rather than tablets? — CoQ10, 100 mg - 50 Softgels, Swanson

Coenzyme Q10 is a fat-soluble compound: it dissolves in fats rather than in water. This means that in dry form, as a powder or an ordinary tablet, the substance is absorbed much less well than in a fat-containing environment.

In Swanson CoQ10, soft gelatin capsules with an oil base are used. The oil inside the capsule creates an environment in which CoQ10 is already dissolved or dispersed, which makes it easier to absorb in the gastrointestinal tract.

Absorption is further helped by taking the capsule with food that contains fat, for example with the main meal. For this reason, taking it on an empty stomach is less advisable.

Tablet forms of CoQ10 do exist and are often cheaper, but for fat-soluble nutrients a soft capsule with an oil matrix is considered preferable from the point of view of bioavailability. This is the generally accepted approach in the production of supplements containing CoQ10, vitamin D, vitamin K and other fat-soluble substances.
