Why is it called a “horse” balm, and how does it differ from ordinary warming creams?

The name “horse balm” goes back to a rural tradition: similar rubbing formulations were used after physical exertion, including in the care of working animals. Over time, such products also became popular among people — above all as a home remedy after workouts, hard physical work or long walks. Today it is simply an established everyday name for a whole class of warming massage balms.

These balms differ from familiar warming creams in small tubes primarily in their consistency and format. A balm is usually thicker than a cream, spreads well during massage and does not run. The large volume is convenient for regular use on large areas — the back, legs and shoulders — without having to use the product sparingly.

The principle of action is standard for this class of products: after application, the feeling of warmth on the surface of the skin intensifies, and massage movements help relieve tension in the soft tissues. It is not a medicinal product but a cosmetic product for external use — it is used for its warming and massage effect, not to treat any conditions.
