Vitamin B12 and folic acid (B9) work together in a number of biochemical processes — above all cell division and blood formation. A deficiency of one can affect the absorption or efficacy of the other, which is why taking them together is common in dietetic practice.
B12 takes part in energy production at the cellular level and is needed for the formation of red blood cells. Folic acid is also linked to blood formation and cell division. Together they take part in homocysteine metabolism — a process studied in the context of cardiovascular health, although the supplement is not intended to treat or prevent any disease.
This combination is especially relevant for those who eat little animal-derived food: B12 is practically absent from plant foods, and folate from natural sources is absorbed less well than synthetic folic acid from supplements.
If you take other preparations or supplements containing B9 or B12, take into account the total intake of these vitamins. During pregnancy, breastfeeding or with chronic conditions, consult a specialist before starting.
