My hair is light, bleached, or highly porous — will the Chocolate shade turn out too dark or uneven, and how should I adjust the application?

Direct dyes deposit pigment on the hair surface and in the upper cuticle layers, so hair that is very light, bleached, or chemically processed has a more open cuticle structure that absorbs colour more readily. This means the Chocolate shade can take significantly more intensely — often appearing darker, richer, or more vibrant than on untreated medium-brown hair. Uneven porosity (common after highlights or previous colour services) can also lead to patchier uptake, with more damaged sections grabbing more pigment.

To manage this: always perform a strand test on a representative section before full application. If the test shows the colour develops too quickly or too deeply, reduce the processing time — start with 5 minutes instead of the usual 10–20, checking every couple of minutes. You can also dilute the tinting shampoo 1:1 with a regular mild shampoo to lower pigment concentration. Apply to damp (not dry) hair for more even distribution, and work quickly from roots to ends. If the result is still darker than desired, a clarifying shampoo used once or twice will lift a significant amount of direct dye without the damage of colour removers. Avoid leaving the product on longer than 20 minutes maximum, and rinse thoroughly with cool water until the water runs clear.
