Can clover be mixed with other herbs to make a home blend?

Loose red clover works both as a drink on its own and as one of the ingredients of a home herbal blend. Its mild, unobtrusive flavour goes well with other herbs without overpowering their aroma.

If you are already familiar with herbal teas and want to make your own blend, clover can be combined with, for example, mint, lemon balm, linden flowers or chamomile — these are common combinations in the European herbal tradition. Proportions are chosen to taste, starting with small amounts of each ingredient.

A few important points when making blends:

  • Use only herbs whose quality and origin you are sure of — from trusted producers or pharmacy-grade herbs.
  • The more ingredients in a blend, the higher the likelihood of an individual reaction to one of them. Introduce new herbs gradually.
  • If you are taking any medication, check with a doctor or pharmacist whether specific herbs are compatible with your treatment — some plants can affect how medicines are absorbed.

The finished blend is best stored in a tightly closed container, away from light and moisture — this preserves the aroma and quality of the herbs for longer.
