Zinc, iron and copper use similar absorption mechanisms in the intestine. If they are taken at the same time and in high doses, they can compete with each other, and the absorption of each will decrease. This is especially relevant with a long course of several mineral supplements at once.
In practice, this means that if you already take iron or copper products, it is better to space out the zinc intake, for example morning and evening. This is a simple way to reduce competition between the minerals without giving up any of them.
Calcium in high doses can also affect the absorption of zinc, so taking it together with calcium supplements is also better separated in time.
If you take several mineral supplements regularly, it is sensible to discuss the schedule with a specialist in advance, especially with sensitive digestion or chronic conditions. Long-term intake of high doses of zinc without need is also undesirable: an excess of the mineral can upset the balance of other trace elements in the body.
